Common questions
General information, not advice for your situation. Rules and deadlines can change; we confirm what applies to you.
When is the deadline?
Most personal returns are due April 30. If you or your spouse are self-employed, the filing deadline is June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30.
I just arrived in Canada. Do I need to file?
Usually yes, and it is worth it: filing can qualify you for benefits and credits such as the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and Quebec's solidarity tax credit, even with little or no income.
Do I need to declare accounts or property outside Canada?
Canadian residents report their worldwide income. If the total cost of your specified foreign property, such as bank accounts, shares or a rental property abroad, was over $100,000 at any time in the year, form T1135 is also required.
